Medicine

What is it?

Being a doctor is about helping people and improving their lives. You treat people who are sick, you advise and reassure them. And, all the time, you remember that they’re not ‘just an illness’ – they’re a person with their own views and feelings.

In medicine, you try to work out what’s wrong. You prescribe a course of treatment. Then you monitor how well your patient is doing, and follow their progress.

It’s a tough job – you’re responsible for people’s lives. You need to be bright and hard-working. You need lots of knowledge at a high level, and you never stop learning. And emotionally it can be hard going, so you need to be strong and know how to look after yourself.

But don’t believe everything you hear. Medicine’s not about going to the ‘right’ school, hanging out with the ‘right’ crowd or having family members who are doctors.

If you’ve got the talent and the determination, there are opportunities for you as a doctor. And once you’re qualified, there’s a huge range of rewarding career options.

Have a look at the links to explore just a few of the jobs open to you in Medicine – in the community as a GP (primary care), as a hospital doctor (secondary care), or as a specialist in a hospital (tertiary care).
