Scrubbing Up
Information for Teachers

The Taste of Medicine website has been designed to help school and college students by providing a range of support including: information and advice about the variety of healthcare courses and careers; how to maximize their chances of progression to a medical or healthcare course, specifically focusing on work experience and communications skills; and how learning and teaching takes place at university.

Scrubbing Up has been developed with Year 11 and Post-16 students in mind, especially those interested in pursuing a career in healthcare given the importance of communication skills in the profession, and the necessity in most cases to perform well in an interview as part of the University selection process. Although it is mainly aimed at those interested in medicine or healthcare, this particular resource has been developed in a way that makes it relevant for all students, irrespective of the subject area they are studying. The development of communication skills, with a particular focus on formal communication, is of relevance to all learners as they progress through their studies and on into employment.

Listed below are some hints and tips on how to make the best use of Scrubbing Up with either a specific class or during a careers information session.  Previous experience has identified the lesson plan as an effective way of communicating important messages about the development of communication skills and the relevance of communication in formal learning and employment settings. The plan has significant curriculum links to Key Stage Four Citizenship and Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education, all of which are detailed within the plan itself.

We believe that Scrubbing Up will be of particular value for the following groups (noting that this list is not exhaustive):

  • Year 11 Science Classes
  • Year 11 Health and Social Care Classes
  • Post 16 students studying specific health and social care courses
  • Post 16 groups with an active interest in studying medicine or health care courses
  • Post 16 groups preparing for University (or employment) interviews

The following simple lesson plan can be used as a guide when you use the Taste of Medicine: ‘Scrubbing Up’ website at your school or college. In addition to this plan you might want to use the website in other ways too, and it can meet curriculum links to other subjects besides those already mentioned.  If you have any questions about the site as a whole or the plan below please contact us at tasteofmedicine@sgul.ac.uk
